The first programming I did was actually batch file scripting in DOS... I soon moved to QBASIC programs... The natural progression was to Visual Basic in grade eight... I spent a few years with VB until I moved to C++... Now, I am a programmer of concepts, meaning I am more or less language independent, using the tool necessary for the job at hand; everything from VB* (6, .NET, ASP, script), C, C++, PHP, CSS, SQL, *sh (bash, sh), javascript, perl, TCL/TK and many others... My favorites are C/C++ and PHP...
I mostly do applications programming and scripting nowadays, usually in C/C++ or .NET (ASP or VB) but I still have hopes of eventually getting into the gaming industry...
So what's up with you..?

Rachael Leigh Cook ... LOL
Well, I'm not really a major programmer .. I just completed my first year of computer science at university .. did a bit of Java, and a bit of Visual Basic (.. which I quite like .. since I'm still in the early stages) :)
I also did Pascal in my last three years of high school .. (does that count ??)

I also did Pascal in my last years at school. It's a crappy language, but at least it teaches one the fundamentals of programming! hell, at least I know how to fix up most of my software related problems! Pascal rules - NOT!

There is no such thing as a useless programming language... Darkwing maintains that pascal is very good - I happen to disagree, but each to his own, I guess...

How well does anybody know Delphi? My sister is working on her school project for grade 11 - a Rubix Cube. It looks pretty good and I am surprised too, because even her (bone-headed) teacher said that she wouldn't be able to pull it off! What she needs is to find out how to turn the cude around - in a 3D way. Anyone can help?

And another one sees the light... :p
Now, I look at programming languages by their advantages and limitations and use what is necessary for the job... Whenever possible, I use C/C++... :)
Lobo, I don't know very much about Pascal... Used it once to help someone with something in Delphi and that was well enough for me... :wow: However, if you really want to get him help, start a new topic here and we'll see what happens, or perhaps have him join and we'll see what happens... Although, no one likes doing someone else's homework, and it is something I refuse to do...

It's not actually doing her homework, Merlin. She is allowed to get external help on the project, as long as she quotes who helped her. But I will find out from her tonight how well things are going and see if I shouldn't start another topic. She works on it all day long! Thanks.

I must be the only dumb thing not to program with c++... I use a language called Pick Basic, I've programmed in that for longer than you can imagine, seriously. I've done the MCSD course, not the exams though, so I've learned about VB and funny enough, loved it at the time, maybe cos it's so simple to use. I've done Pascal and Assembler at university, that's about it. I really, really, really wish I had the time to learn c++, i hate application programming, i'd love to get into something scientific...

I have been programming for about 14 years. At the momment, I am a professional developer, developing in C++, VB, Delphi, Java and Perl.
In my 14 years, I have used almost every single language available such as, Pascal, Python, Lisp, Clipper, Cobol, Fortran, ADA, Powerbuilder, ASM and several others including all the different flavours of basic.
I like to think I am quite competent, and was called a "hardcore" programmer on the last Recomendation I got from a company.
But all of that means nothing. At the end of the day, I do it for fun, because I love it. I stay up late at night after work writing stuff just to see if I can do it, and to have fun...
What kind of programmer am I? Hacker? Maybe...
Out...
